CHAPTER 14

DOTIMSTAD

“It is strange for me,” Hyrren said. “In Mudena Del-Edha, we were kept hidden. In Khelrusa, we were beaten and starved. And afterwards, in Kyrindem, we were still just tools for Azael’s purposes.”

“Can you not accept his kindness?” Aifett asked. The meetings between Jordskal and Hyrren had been going better than she had hoped, but Hyrren was still uneasy about something. Perhaps Vengsul’s arrival had complicated matters for him—made his trust that much more critical and therefore elusive.

“I know how you feel, Brother,” Vengsul admitted. “I feel the same way … as if I don’t deserve anything that I didn’t fight for. But I believe the Sea God to be truthful.”

“He is,” Aifett added.

“I trust you both,” Hyrren continued. “I just can’t bring myself to accept that someone of his power would willingly limit himself for the sake of others. To not use his power as a weapon … I have never seen that in all my life.”

“I disagree,” Vengsul replied. “I saw it in Khelrusa with my own eyes. In you, Hyrren, who sacrificed your own safety for all of us. You took your life in your hands when you stood up to Luhad. And you did it again when you went to the temple to confront Azael. Time and again, you used whatever power you had for the sake of others. It is the mark of a true king. That is why it is not impossible for the Sea God to be who he claims to be. Rare, perhaps, but not impossible.”

Aifett was almost embarrassed by the intensity of her own smile, but she found it difficult to contain her joy. Despite their lack of blood relation, she had grown up with Hyrren and Vengsul beneath the southern mountains of Mudena Del-Edha. As the firstborn of all Nephiylim, these three considered each other siblings. And now they were finally together again.

“Oh, how I have missed you, Vengsul!” she said. “I didn’t know if Madrir would find you in that mountain. I’d hoped you hadn’t moved on from there, but I told myself that it was a possibility. And even if he found you, I wasn’t sure you’d come.”

Vengsul smiled and set his hand on her shoulder. “I wouldn’t have missed this, not even if all the monsters of the earth were hovering in my way.”

Hyrren looked up from the fire between them. “Are they still hunting your people, then?”

“They are. But Falveng is very far away, and we have become adept at defending ourselves.”

“Yes, Madrir said he was afraid for perhaps the first time in his life when he delivered my invitation.”

“Well, then I know my scouts are doing their jobs,” Vengsul replied with a smile. “We have to be cautious if we wish to survive.”

Aifett looked out across the waters and shook her head. It was difficult to hear of her brothers’ hardships when she had been here, protected for so long. They were sitting on the shoreline of a smaller island, just west of Dotimstad.
